Built in 1869, on what was then the racecourse of the Liverpool Hunt Club, Hoylake is the oldest of all the English seaside courses with the exception of Westward Ho in Devon. Royal Liverpool can be, by turns, beautiful, uplifting, awe inspiring and, on occasion, soul-destroying. Royal Liverpool Golf Club, Hoylake played host to the 2012 Women’s British Open, the 2013 British Boys’ Championship and will host the 2014 ‘Open Championship’.
A History of Great Play
Royal Liverpool Golf Club has hosted The Open Championship 13 times, crowning legends such as J.H. Taylor, Walter Hagen, Fred Daly, Peter Thomson, Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy, and most recently Brian Harman in 2023. The club’s storied history includes Bobby Jones’ 1930 Open victory—part of his historic Grand Slam—and the 1969 Walker Cup. Hoylake has also welcomed major events such as the Women’s British Open in 2012 and the Walker Cup in 2019, reaffirming its status as one of golf’s most celebrated championship venues.
